It’s been 27 years since the movie Above the Rim, a classic directed by Jeff Pollack, hit the screen portraying the story of a promising high school basketball player and his relationship with his two brothers, a drug dealer and a former basketball star, who was also his source of inspiration.
Starring Tupac Shakur, Duane Martin, Marlon Wynans and Bernie Mac, the film brought an important narrative about the importance of surrounding ourselves with positive references as a focus and motivation triggering factor. Above the Rim soundtrack was also considered a landmark for the time and extremely important for Hip-Hop.
Released by Death Row Records in collaboration with Interscope Records, it received in 1995 the 'Source Award' for the best soundtrack of the year. Having Suge Knight and Dr. Dre acting as executive producers and appearances by artists such as 2Pac, Warren G, SWV, Snoop Dogg, Nate Dogg and The Lady of Rage, the album sold more than 2,000,000 copies and reached Billboard's number one spot in the category of R & B / Hip Hop.
